THEY TRIED TO SACRIFICE YOU TO THEIR GOD. THEY FAILED, AND NOW, BLESSED BY A RIVAL GOD WITH THE POWER OF THE GUTGUN, YOU WILL TEAR THEM DOWN.

YOUR GUT IS YOUR GUN. YOUR GUN IS YOUR GUT.

GUTGUN?

GUTGUN is a solo TTRPG (table-top role-playing game) that translates the blood-pumping fun of a classic PC shooter to tabletop. You are a lone force of nature tearing through whatever gets in your way.

This is a game for those who enjoy classic PC shooters (AKA “boomer shooters”) such as DOOM, Quake, or even modern titles such as DUSK, Forgive Me Father, and ULTRAKILL.

GUTGUN is designed to feel like a forgotten sister to these games, and to make you, the player, feel like an unstoppable force of nature.

THE GAME

In order to evoke the feeling of playing boomer shooter— being a force of nature that is always mere moments away from death— GUTGUN's combat is designed for speedy action that forces you to make quick, risky decisions that could save your life— or end it. The GUTGUN is a part of you now, and every shot fired uses your own lifeforce. ENEMIES, in turn, drop varying amounts of SOULGUTS that replenish your health.

GUTGUN is played via a linear CAMPAIGN, split into EPISODES and MISSIONS. The final MISSION of each EPISODE has you face off against its BOSS. Each MISSION is divided into various ENCOUNTERS, which offer a variety of challenges such as unique ENEMIES, TRAPS, and MODIFIERS.

Combat is played along a horizontal track, evoking the same feeling of tunnel vision found in fast-paced boomer shooters.

To come out the other end alive, you'll have to tactically utilize your expanding ARSENAL of GUNS, while managing your very HEALTH as ammunition. What ENEMIES do you kill first? The deadliest? Or the easiest— so you can siphon their SOULGUTS to keep your ever-precious HEALTH sustained a moment longer?

Hey, just tried to get started today, have a question: Is it just me, or is the Chapel encounter in E1 impossible to beat without Cheats, Secrets, etc.?

Because you can only deal 1 damage, and there's a disciple with 2HP,  you're always going to trigger a Hord spawning on Round 2 and every round after.

  1. So by the end of Round 1, you have one enemy with 1HP left regardless of what order you target them in.
  2. You start Round 2 with an Enemy on 1 HP and a Hord spawns in on 1 HP. You kill the disciple, (it doesn't get a turn) then the Hord Runs + Attacks. Then it's round over because all the surviving enemies have acted.
  3. Then you start round 3, Hord at 1 HP, a new Hord spawns. You kill the close Hord. Then the far Hord acts (or vice versa, kill the far Hord while the near Hord bites your face off). Then all the enemies have acted so it's a new round.
  4. Then round 3 you have 1 Hord on the table, and new Hord spawns...ad nauseum.

Am I doing something wrong the order of operations? Are spawns only meant to happen at the end of the Round? Are the Hords meant to stop spawning when the original ENEMIES are gone (as opposed to always spawning when any enemy is on the board)? Is the encounter just meant to be impossible on first playthrough...?

Thanks for catching that! Given the MODIFIER you're describing, I assume this is the COURT, rather than the CHAPEL?

The intent is indeed for the HORDS to stop SPAWNING after the final "original" ENEMY is killed, but reading it this long after I wrote it, it does seem poorly explained and I apologize for this. I am actually a little surprised this wasn't caught by myself earlier, or during playtesting by others.

Something always falls through in a book this size, unfortunately. I've updated the book with clarification, there! It now reads "once the original ENEMIES are dead" instead of "all ENEMIES".  You can redownload the PDF to find that resolved.

Er, yes. The Court. That's all good, I continued playing in the spirit of roguelikes. Following run I managed to avoid rolling it until after my character picked up a bilegun.

Glad you got through! I hope you enjoy the rest of the game!
